What’s Oppo drinking tonight? Anxiety got pretty gnarly today so the GF and I finished off a bottle after cleaning the garage.

Kinja'd!!!

Next up is cleaning our 350+ gallons of fishtanks just in our bedroom alone! Should be an adventure.

350 gallons? That is a lot of goddamn fish!

I actually changed my initial reply because I looked up shark tanks. They are like 5-7 THOUSAND gallons. That's a lot of water.

While a shark would be very cool, we have a 150 in the room with a snowflake moray eel that’s still growing quite a bit, and we’re mostly into inverts. Now a 600lb giant clam on the other hand.....

Too bad a full grown one is about 4k, I’d rather have another car.

I’m not drinking, but I’m slightly high on edibles containing 5 mg THC. I’m such a lightweight.

Indeedy do. If we buy a house with a basement it will actually go into consideration, as you can set up a very large sump in the basement and interconnect all your tanks, which would make maintenance a breeze.

It would be so cool to have friends over and just be like “that’s just my shark, no big deal”.

Also you can get smaller sharks that require a 300 gallon tank, but we are big time animal lovers and look at that as the bare minimum. I try to provide at least twice the “minimum” for all my fishys.

Being a lightweight is never a bad thing! We are in Oregon and grow our own, so yes there will likely be some consumption of cannabis tonight as well.

I’ve had 2 bottles on shock top.

I feel alot happier cleaning buzzed than cleaning sober.

How is the Reyka vodka? I’ve been drinking cheap Vladivar vodka (because why not) for the last couple of days but may get a bottle of Belvedere tomorrow morning when I finish work. It’s a lovely very smooth vodka.

Pretty smooth, definately a good bottle for the current sale price of 20 for a fifth. My favorite is still crater lake (local to me in Oregon) but I’d place the Reyka in a firm second. It’s made in a copper still so it has a slightly different aftertaste to it.

Definately better than syrup-y grey goose, which seems to be the standard for reasonably priced vodka but is not one of my favorites.

I’ve had Absolut (plain and various flavours), Blavod, Eristoff, Grasovka, Grey Goose, Oddka, Russian Standard, Svensk (plain and flavoured), Stoli (various) and Zubrowka.

I enjoyed the Wild Strawberry Svensk (it actually did taste of strawberries) and at some point want to try Roberto Cavalli and Uluvka.

So far Belvedere has been the best.

I’ll have to remember belvedere and give that one a try. We live several blocks from the Oregon liquor depot which is the biggest store in Oregon, so I’m sure they’ll have some of those.

I have to say though that I cannot stand flavored vodka. Especially “sweet” flavors like whipped cream *shudder* or the like.

Can you actually recommend a good vodka? I just want to try something different than the current vodkas I usually drink (Stoli, Absolut and Finlandia).

Absolut is not bad, Finlandia is pretty good. We’re still new to the drinking game but our favorite so far is crater lake, though if you’re not in the PNW idk if you’ll be able to find it. It’s by a company called Bendistillery

Flavoured vodkas are a gimmick in my book. Though as I say the Wild Strawberry Svensk vodka actually tasted and the flavour stayed which most have maybe a hint of the stated flavour but that is very brief.

I am also tempted by The Lakes Vodka. It’s a distillery that opened a couple of years ago or so in Bassenthwaite which is 44 miles down the road from me.

If you try the Belvedere and you don’t like it, let me know and I’ll reimburse the money to you. Can’t say fairer than that.

The fruit flavors aren’t quite as bad as the sugary ones but I still think plain is the way to go.

I think being able to enjoy a local distillery is neat, both to support local business, and because visiting the company and seeing how they go through the process can be a good adventure in itself. I’ll have to let you know if I spot The Lakes at a local store.

As to the Belvedere, if I can find a bottle I’ll definitely post it up!

I like supporting local business but when it comes to drinks I love Irish stuff. Guinness, Bushmills and Teeling whiskey, etc...

I’d be surprised if you got The Lakes vodka, gin or whisky locally to be honest.

Everyday drinkin: Tito’s

Something nice on the rocks: Chopin Potato

If you can find it: Dingle Vodka (Pot Still, Made in Ireland, but not from potatoes)

I’ve been liking the copper-distilled vodkas. By nature, vodka doesn’t have much taste, so the little differences matter. And no, don’t drink flavored vodkas.

I’ll have to give it a look.

Yeah I’m definitely a vodka person because I like the lack of taste so the flavored ones null and void that.

I bought a small bottle of Ciroc vodka and a small bottle of Haig Club single grain scotch whisky

Ciroc gets some good reviews but to me it’s on a par with Smirnof. Not smooth, harsh aftertaste, yet still drinkable.

Haig Club is actually rather pleasant for a scotch whisky. I’m an Irish whiskey drinker but at a push I’d certainly drink Haig Club again.

Nice! I’ve tried Ciroq once before but I can’t quite recall how it was, I’ll have to give it another shot.

I’ve never been a huge whiskey drinker. What’s the difference between a scotch whiskey and an Irish whiskey?

Kinja'd!!! Svend > Sovereign, Purveyor of Coupes

Kinja'd!!!0

Scotch whisky is generally distilled twice and Irish whiskey is distilled three times. Distilling three times leaves a smoother taste.

Scotch whisky is also peaty as peat is used to dry the malted barley.

I’ve had a couple of bad Irish whiskeys but on the whole they are smooth with delicate flavours and no harsh after taste.

I highly recommend Teeling Single Grain (the single malt isn’t as enjoyable). Bushmills 10 year old single malt is also a great drink as is Bushmills Black Bush.
